Home of the Blue Mango

One stop for insanity.

Regreso a la Carcel

Yes, it has been awhile since I've penned an entry, for which I blame this strangling, oppressive heat-wave that has transformed my house into an intelligent-thought obliterating inferno. My room gets double kudos for proving that a fan turned on "high" and an open window do nothing, read... NOTHING to ease the pain of an air-conditioner less existence.

But still, it's a huge step up from my Centre Avenue ghetto (whose destruction I pray daily for). At some point, I'd like to write some memoirs of the apartment down, kind of like what war veterans do...you know, just to prove that I was there and survived.

Soo...back in California with the parents pondering over all the things I'd like to have happen this summer/year before I (if there's any justice in this world) head off far away to law school.

1. Get the hell out of Dodge..or rather the cultural kaleidoscope that is Cupertino, and head on over to Chiapas by New Years. You know, so I'm spared the moronic countdown with the aesthetically grating Barbara Walters and the usual pointless apple cider toast with most of the family asleep from sheer boredom.
Unfortunately the Chiapas-Cuba-Venezuela-Bolivia-Peru-(Brazil?)-(Columbia?)trek is gonna be deferred by a month or so (...damnit!) thanks to my taking the LSAT otra vez. The only consolation is if I manage to restrict my spending to ..like 4 pesos a month, I can probably afford to spend my 22nd bday in a foreign locale.

2. Avoid the constant barrage of immigrant burden stories... after a few days of celebrating my return, my parents have been averaging about 5-6 lectures a day. And folks, nowadays they aren't just about the importance of daily calcium intake! My year-long incarceration has prompted my parents to expand their routine to cover topics that range from proper work ethic:

"You kids don't know the meaning of hard work. Sometimes we would walk in the acid rain of monsoon season from factory to factory, hoping that somebody would buy the small clay figurines my 2 year old brother fashioned with hands that were ravaged by leprosy."

, the trip (which my mom alternates between outright forbidding me o go on and then sternly telling me that my "excursion" was limited to 3 weeks.)

"Back in my day, we never wanted to part with out parents. Staying at home and praying by their feet while simultanously studying Calculus was entertainment enough!"

the importance of achievement,

"You wake up so late, how are you supposed to accomplish anything? Just LOOK at your cousin Priya, already finished medical school, bought a house, and discovered a new solar system by the age of 12!"

Or even the World cup (speaking of which Go Portugal!):

"When I was your age, we couldn't afford to play sports! I'd have to adjust my sister's glass eye, and hope some light would filter through the cracks of our windowless mud hut, so we could kick around a dead rat."

3. Finding some activist shit to get involved with in SF, despite my mother telling me "You're out of college, let all that be over." HA! Okay, sure I don't have a car, and they know exactly where I am at all times. But that shouldn't be too much of an impediment right?

4. Gettin my espanol on!
I loathe grammar, but alas I'm reading it most nights with a freaking flashlight. I think it's provoking the ire of my parents since my 6 years of French instruction has receded into the depths of my memory, most likely never to be retrieved again. With the exception of some choice insults and the occasional compliment. Hey, I was raised to be polite, what can I say?

Yes... quite the disconnect between reality and my very rich fantasy life.

Anyway, so this has been week 1 of Nina's Seclusion from the Outside World. Look out for more coverage...

Random note: The guy sitting to my left in the library smells like rancid milk. Whew.
